To mount the UPPER shock to instead of using the floor. For 1955, 1956 and 1957 Chevy Passenger Cars, NOT for NOMADS or Station Wagons. NOTE: These are now Powder Coated, Black Semi Gloss, Looks great. This shock cross member (support) is a sturdy and easily installed fix for this vulnerable rear area of you Tri-Five Chevy. Install this and stop worrying about that rust-prone trunk floor.
Sorry but we do not have any instructions that go with the Rear Shock Cross member. But here is how to install them:
First lift car on a hoist with weight on the tires.
Remove the mounting inside the trunk on the shocks and push them down through the hole you do not need to remove them at the bottom unless they are gas shocks then you will.
Then lift the rack up and install the cross member up inside the frame rails next to the floor leaving room for the shock shaft to go through the cross member and be able to install the upper rubber washer and nut just clearing the floor where it went through before, start the nuts but do not tighten yet. You do not want the shaft or the cross member to touch the floor as you would get lots of noise if the cross member touches the body. Mark the holes in the brackets next to the frame and drill the holes and install the bolts through the brackets and tighten all the bolts and top shock shaft nuts down.
Then reinstall the shocks at the bottom if needed.
Some exhaust pipe may be close you can put the cross member anywhere you have the clearance you need.
Hope this helps.
